About the Event
In a predominantly male-run field, women are brewing standout sakes.
Out of approximately 1,300 sake breweries in Japan, not many are female-run, and less than 50 of them have female tojis, or brew masters, who are in charge of the physical act of making the sake. This reflects the workplace challenges women face in Japan, and indeed worldwide. But it also reflects of cultural taboos specific to the production and consumption of the rice-based drink. For many years, women were not allowed inside sake breweries as they were perceived as unclean in traditional Japanese culture. But there is a revolution happening in Japan and alongside a growing number of prominent women in sake, the brewers below are changing the narrative and creating incredible sake while doing-so!
