The Academy Presents: The 2023 Legends Awards, honoring Peter Berlin

Everyone in the community is invited to join us in celebration as we honor 2023 Legends Archive inductee, Peter Berlin, as well as our community honorees at the Legends Awards, our annual awards gala, hosted by Sister Roma! The Legends Archive was created to recognize those people who are profoundly shaping the LGBTQ+ community that we live in. Each year, The Academy selects one individual who has truly become a Legend.

2023 Community Award Honorees:

ABOUT PETER BERLIN

A German-American photographer, artist, filmmaker, clothing designer, and model, Peter Berlin became the embodiment of a sexually expressive San Francisco in the 70s. His two films, Nights in Black Leather and That Boy, helped bring gay male erotic films artistic legitimacy. While he never set out to become an icon, his self portraits drew in onlookers, and his iconic looks continue to inspire a generation of queer men.

ABOUT THE LEGENDS ARCHIVE

The Legends Archive was created to recognize those people of our own era that we feel have shaped the LGBTQ+ community that we live in. The Legends of the past like Sylvester, Harvey Milk, and Divine have paved the way for us, and now it is time to hold up the Legends that we continue to create in this dynamic epicenter that is San Francisco.

Each year, The Academy selects one individual who has truly become a Legend, worthy of being remembered in the historical archive. They are invited to donate a personal artifact to represent themselves and their contribution to the community to be put on permanent display.
