Academy Live: Karina Deniké & Michael McIntosh

Vocalist Karina Deniké will sing a selection of songs from the past and present with piano accompaniment by Michael McIntosh. Expect some tearjerkers, heartbreakers, oldies, goldies, Beatles, blueseys, torch songs, originals, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Sam Cooke and more songs from the1930s–1980s song books. Members of the swing and jazz band The Cottontails, Karina and Michael have been presented and featured at Flower Piano, Bimbos, The Regency Ballroom, SF Jazz, Yoshis, The Contemporary Jewish Museum and performed in Japan, London, and New York.  www.thecottontails.com

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

San Francisco's darling Karina Deniké is a versatile, sought after vocalist, songwriter, collaborator and band leader who moves fluidly from intimate torch song chanteuse to big band jazz singer, soulful songstress to punk powerhouse. "Deniké possesses a voice so rich and luxuriant she sounds like she was born to sing any song that comes her way". (KQED’s California Report). She tours regularly and has released over 30 albums and been on countless soundtracks. Denike performs and records with the Cottontails, The Red Room Orchestra, The Bluebelles, Marc and The Casuals, and also with with Hope Sandoval, NOFX, The Bluebelles, and many more.

Michael McIntosh plays classical, jazz and rock piano in San Francisco. "His solos can evoke everyone from Jelly Roll Morton to Herbie Hancock, and he is known to pound out liturgical music on the pump organ in his spare time. He epitomizes the pluck and spirit of The Cottontails - dogged, versatile, virtuosic; a light-fingered role player where called for, but a spine tingling soloist when he chooses."( The Bay Bridged) . McIntosh has recorded with Jolie Holland, Johnathan Richman, Ralph Carney's serious Jass Project, The Cottontails, among many others.
